What is a Billiken?

Traditionally in Alaska, a Billiken is a good luck charm carved from ivory, antler, jade, or soapstone. Merchants would carve these small smiling figurines for jewelry or souvenirs.

How did Billiken Point start?

Grandma O’berry started leasing 3 acres of Billiken Point from the state in 1968. The first year of building on the site was cold as Joan and the kids arrived in February and were living in a lean-to at first. From there, the “little cabin” was built over ____ (amount of time). Originally, the beach was not utilized as the landing point it is now. They used to scramble up the cliff face surrounding the point to reach where the cabin is placed. The trail up to the cabin was started by grandma Joan walking down to the beach for some private time to do her business.

What is Billiken Point now?

Located near Homer, Alaska Billiken Point is a place where friends and family come to get away from the city and relax (or work!). The two cabins are situated on a “point” of land that is surrounded by cliffs of rock on three sides that lead into Kachemak bay.
